Evan S. Connell, Jr. Collection



We offer a comprehensive collection of this difficult and contrarian but highly esteemed novelist, poet, short story writer, and historian. Long recognized as one of America's important literary voices, Connell established his reputation with his first and best known novel, Mrs Bridge. This, along with Mr Bridge, was made into a successful Merchant-Ivory film in 1990. But his other novels, such as The diary of a Rapist and the Double Honeymoon, are dark and disconcerting works about obsession and paranoia. Through a series of books, beginning with the best selling Son of the Morning Star, Connell explores the boundary between historical and fictional imagination, calling on extensive scholarly research and knowledge. Except for the novels about the Bridges, his viewpoint is untraditional and oblique, and in his later work, such as The Alchymist, his lapidary and pointillist prose make few concessions to the reader. Connell's manuscripts are at the Boston University Library.

The collection consists of 58 volumes. All of the fiction is represented in both the first American and English editions (where the latter exist), in fine condition, with 11 titles in the advance proof state, and two titles signed (Mrs. Bridge, the author's most popular book, and St. Augustine's Pigeon). Curiously (with the exception of Son of the morning star, 1985), from 1973 beginning with Points for a compass rose until 2000 with Deus lo Volt! no hardback English editions were published. Of particular interest in the collection is “Mister Wasp” the first draft of a screenplay by Connell, based on The diary of a rapist, evidently never produced. Also scarce is the advance publication of the story, “The Yellow Raft” from Saint Augustine's Pigeon, with a note from the press laid in stating “for your archives, one of 175 (give or take 10 or 12) done in advance of the book out of embarrassment of having a book party with no books at hand.”
